The 2023 Karate 1-Series A Athens got underway on Friday with Greek athletes dominating the competition. The representatives of the host nation were the big winners of the day, taking three spots in the finals.</p>
<p>HOSTS OF GREECE CELEBRATE THREE FINALS</p>
<p>The organizing nation celebrated Kyriaki Kydonaki’s qualification to the final of Female Kumite +68kg. The top Greek athlete who is the current European Championships bronze medallist defeated Fatima Uygur of Turkiye in the semi-finals (2-1).</p>
<p>Her rival in the final is Kelara Madani of the United States, who beat Maria Korpela of Finland in the semi-finals (2-1) to reach her first title-deciding bout in international competitions.</p>
<p>The second final for the host nation came in Male Kumite -84kg. Konstantinos Mastrogiannis made it to his first final following a slim 1-0 triumph over Vitomir Trajkovski.</p>
<p>The local hopeful will fight for the title against Junya Eto of Japan, who edged Andrea Minardi of Italy in the semi-finals 1-0.</p>
<p>Greece’s impressive performance continued in Male Kumite -75kg as Theocharis Giannakos also made it to the final. In his first senior international competition, the Greek representative defeated Enes Bulut of Turkey in the semi-finals 4-3.</p>
<p>His rival in the final is Abdelkarim Asaas of Morocco, who upset Djordje Salapura of Serbia in the semi-finals 4-3.</p>
<p>ALL JAPAN FINAL IN FEMALE KATA</p>
<p>The birth nation of Karate continues showcasing strength in Kata, as the final of Female Kata will have two competitors from Japan clashing for gold. Haya Horiba dominated the final pool with a score of 43.7 while U21 World champion Mirisa Ohuchi topped her pool with a score of 42.7.</p>
<p>Japan’s success on day 1 was also transferred to Kumite categories, since Tsubasa Kama reached the final of Female Kumite -68kg. The U21 World Championships bronze medallists upset Melinda Marmot of France in the semi-finals (2-0).</p>
<p>The Japanese karateka will clash for the title against Mia Greta Zorko of Croatia. The current European Championships bronze medallist made it to the final after winning the semi-final bout against Lolita Kostrytsia of Ukraine 1-1.</p>
<p>BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA SURPRISE IN MALE KUMITE +84KG</p>
<p>In a surprising demonstration of abilities of the representatives of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the category of Male Kumite +84kg will have an all-Bosnia and Herzegovina final as Sandro Kresic and Anes Bostandzic both reached the last bout. Kresic defeated Luka Vukovic of Serbia 3-0 while Bostandzic beat Bogdan Trikos of Serbia 4-0.</p>
<p>The clash for gold Spain vs Kuwait in Male Team Kata completed the list of finalists on day 1 of #Karate1Athens.</p>

The last Karate 1-Series A event of the season started today in Jakarta (Indonesia). Promising karatekas and representatives of Japan were the big winners on the opening day of the competition.</p>
<p>JAPAN IMPRESS IN KATA AND KUMITE</p>
<p>Emiri Iwamoto of Japan confirmed her status as the main favourite to take the title since she qualified for the final after dominating the last round. The three-time Karate 1-Premier League winner and former continental champion topped the last pool with a score of 25.48.</p>
<p>The final of Female Kata will be an All-Japan affair as the other spot in the title-deciding bout is taken by Saeko Azuma. In her second international appearance, Azuma prevailed in the final pool with a score of 26.12.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The Kata categories were completed today with the Male Team Kata division. The title will stay in Indonesia as the two squads from the organising countries will fight for gold.</p>
<p>The Japanese delegation not only celebrated success in Kata. The final of Male Kumite -84kg will also have two competitors from the birth nation of the sport clashing for gold. Yori Muta who is the current World Championships bronze medallist qualified for the final after claiming a convincing 4-0 triumph over Iran’s Seyed Reza Khoshkalam.</p>
<p>Teammate Rikito Shimada prevailed on the other side of the pool following a 2-1 victory over Kostiantyn Tsymbal of Ukraine.</p>
<p>The third category with Japanese karatekas in the final is Male Kumite +84kg. Fumiya Yoshimura will fight to take the flag of the Asian nation to the top of the podium after making it to his first final in international competitions. The young Japanese karateka beat Athanasios Koukouritakis of Greece 2-0.</p>
<p>His rival in the final is Rijad Dzuho of Bosnia and Herzegovina who reached his first Karate 1 final following an outstanding 7-0 victory over Sudhir Sehrawat of India.</p>
<p>ONE MORE FINAL FOR INDONESIA</p>
<p>Hosts of Indonesia had more reasons to celebrate as Dessynta Rakawuni Banurea qualified for the title-deciding bout of Female Kumite +68kg. The former continental championships bronze medallist made it to the gold-medal clash after beating Amirah Syahirah Azlan of Malaysia 5-0.</p>

<p>The local hopeful will meet Hannah Sullivan of Australia in the final. The current continental champion reached her first Karate 1 title bout as she defeated Nikola Bartha of Hungary 2-0.</p>
<p>TALENTED YOUNG KARATEKAS SURPRISE IN FEMALE KUMITE -68KG</p>
<p>Up-and-coming karatekas succeeded in Female Kumite -68kg. Two promising athletes surprised favourites and will fight for the title. Laura Alikul of Kazakhstan made it to the title-deciding bout of her first senior international appearance after defeating local hopeful Devi Trianna of Indonesia 3-1.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Sara Deuble of Switzerland reached her first international final in two appearances following a 2-1 victory over Mandy Yap of Australia.</p>

<p>UNIVERSALITY OF KARATE DEMONSTRATED IN MALE KUMITE -75KG</p>
<p>Karate’s global reach is further showcased in Jakarta as the final of Male Kumite -75kg will have Mohamed Abudabous of Libya and Hamza Turulja of Bosnia and Herzegovina fighting for gold.</p>
<p>The Libyan karateka reached his first final in two international appearances after beating Davut Nazmyradov of Turkmenistan 3-1. Meanwhile, 5th-placed in EKF Championships Hamza Turulja beat Oleksandr Karas of Ukraine 3-1 to make it to the final.</p>
